Who knew shopping could be such a nice experience? Usually I hate going through the shops, looking at things and waiting for my wife to decide which of the three (usually more) almost identical objects has better 'value-for-money', looks better and can be considered of superior quality. But not this time. Looking at all this prams (there are many kinds, with detachable parts and everything - almost as interesting as PC-s, and much more solidly built), child-beds and other objects 'nec...

Reading the forums I've come to the conclusion most people haven't studied logics in high school. The logical errors in argumentation are abundant and are the reason most discussions end in a petty bickering. Maybe reading this Link or this Link could help.

I know this could provoke hard feelings from people who work in the army or have family members there, but I'm putting it completely theoretical. Let's see... To be opposed to unlawful behaviour is OK, because breaking of laws is anti-social behaviour and bad for all of us. We have police to stop that kind of behaviour. And to be a police officer is a honourable job - your calling is to protect the society as a whole. War is unlawful in more than one element - it's destruction of propert...

A white paper about woman in gaming industry (caution, 1,8 Mb PDF) Link says (among other things) that women enjoy games in a specific way. **What a surprise! They enjoy most of the things in a different way than men - but that's another subject.** Specifically, it says that the situations where You lose a life and irreversibly lose some abilities or achievements can force a woman to stop playing altogether. Can you not agree? There's nothing more irritating than losing a life and ha...

It seems "Games are growing up" Link and Link - at least that is how the 'mainstream media' describes the case of digital nudity. There is more than one issue here so I'd just like to state those I'll refrain from commenting now: - there's been provocative content in videogames from the start, so why the attention now? (probably because of the quality of graphics, but that's an excuse, not an explanation) - how does a few naked bodies in a game mean that they have 'grown up' ? So...

I've been thinking about the benefits of education, and I came across some very disturbing facts. So I decided to pute them in writing, in hope they will look better that way. Here goes: What I got from education (highs school, university, post graduate + various courses and seminars + countless non-fiction books) - a deeper understanding of a world around me - but not the perfect understanding as that seems to be (as yet) unatainable - more insight in dangers and problems me as a person...

There's people who want to but cannot heave children, people who would like to adopt children and countries (mostly in Europe) having a very low birth rate and in need of children. There are also people performing abortions, people having too many children to support them and people neglecting their children - in emotional development, education and other aspects. On the other hand, there are countries where the streets are full of cars, parking places are hard to find and car-related pol...

I just felt my baby move through the skin of my wife's tummy. It's a special experience I can tell You (if You didn't have it already and I'm old news) and somehow awakening in a new way. Although I knew I would be getting a child in a few months, only now do I fully understand that there's a living creature waiting to happen in my wife's womb. So funny, how we can know something but not really understand it until we touch it or see it. And, if You want to know, it's a girl.

Anything we do is on some level (usually on a very basic level) influenced by greed. Don't agree? Well, You should. We work because we wont more - and we don't stop when we've earned enough if we can get even more. We Have children because WE want to have children (to satisfy our urge) - not because we want to make a new person. We spend time with our loved ones, give them presents and affection because it makes US feel better... And it's not only each and every one of us - the system is ...

OK, I'm very presumptuous, and suggest in the title that I'll tell You why anybody writes this things. But not really. Here I'll think about why I do it and maybe it is valid for somebody else. Maybe even You. So, why do I do it? Is it because I have no one to talk to about some things? Well, no, I have a wife that is also my very good friend (no, she is not reading this) and I can talk to her about anything. I also have some friends (who are not my wife, and also not reading this), open t...

Listening about all this trials for war crimes, I can't help but wonder how is it that the war is not considered a crime by itself? Let's be honest, it's the killing and destruction of property of the highest degree. But OK everybody's doing it so it's not a crime. I don't like this kind of reasoning but if we don't consider war a crime, how can we explain the 'war crimes' as crimes? It's the same as saying that a murderer is not guilty for murder but is for breaking the ashtray in the vi...

This blogg is prompted by a discussion tied to another one of my rants , and specially to the comments made by a reader that set me thinking. Anyway, the problem is this - we (most of us) live in so called 'democracies'. Why 'so called'? Read on... To define democracy, I went here A democracy is a form of government in which the people, either directly or indirectly, take part in governing. The term is also used as a measurement of how much influence a people has over their gover...

This is a rant about (video and computer) games and their effect on children. Nothing quite new, but somehow I don't feel anybody has given a definitive or objective statement about the subject. Neither can I but I can put forward some questions and think about them... Let's see: (talking about young children - ages 3-8) - games are a tool for learning about the world around them, specifically teaching them the action-consequence and good-evil relationship. Games also help expand the vo...

No, I'm not going to write some 'sense and sensibility'-based stuff. What I'm interested today is how to instill a sense of morality in a child or, to set it even more plain - how to make a person distinugish between good and evil - without having to resort to a 'carrot and stick' method. I mean, explaining plainly doesn't work - even on grown-ups. So how do we teach the childern anything without saying: 'you'll get spanked if you do / don't do this or that'? Anyway, are we in our own liv...

Seeing as how I'll soon become a parent, each day I have some thoughts about the way I should bring up my child (and no, we don't know which gender it wil be - yet). Should I try to impose only a few moral guidelines, leave it all to the school and society or try to transfer to it my complete view of the world and value system? Each of these solutions is doomed to failure, as I've seen the results of them on my friends. E.: - if a parent tries to enforce his/her view he can create two thing...
